The seat is currently held by Senator John Kerr of Goldsboro who has announced that he will not run for re-election.

KATHY TAFT TO CALL FOR RUN-OFF ELECTION IN STATE SENATE DISTRICT 05

(May 7, 2008) – Kathy Taft, Democratic candidate for North Carolina Senate District 05, said this morning that she is planning to call for a run-off primary against Snow Hill Mayor Don Davis. Taft finished in second place with 24 percent of the vote behind Davis 35 percent in a primary contest with six candidates, including two former legislators.

“It is my intention to file the paper work necessary with the Board of Elections to seek a run-off primary,” Taft said Wednesday morning. “We ran a hard race in a field with six candidates. We came in second in an extraordinary primary. I will work to unite the Democratic Party across the district. I will continue to talk about the key issues facing voters in Eastern North Carolina. I want to continue this campaign to give Democrats a strong nominee who can take the fight to Louis Pate in November,” Taft said.

“This morning I am calling my fellow Democrats asking for their support and their help. This is a historic race and I look forward to continuing this campaign so we can elect a nominee based on our background, our experience and our vision for Greene, Pitt and Wayne Counties,” added Taft.

“Our campaign is building momentum because we have offered the voters clear cut plans on dealing with our economy, strengthening our schools, curbing gang violence and providing health care for all children in our state. I will continue to focus on the issues letting voters in District 05 know where I stand and that I can win the fight in November,” said Taft.
